Follow up. If you fail in games where mistakes and NPC death are considered canon, are you more likely to see where the narrative leads or immediately replay to get the best outcome?

I'm very interested in the current disparity between these two poll results. Perhaps different people are voting on each one, perhaps some people are only voting on one poll and not the other. But it makes me wonder... Do we like the idea of canon failure more than the reality?

Or, more likely, does it entirely depend on our attitude to choices and consequences in narrative? Our bias, as writers, towards certain choices, or our having a success/fail approach rather than a different path approach?

Are we offering players the wrong things, trying to catch them out and presumptuously teach them our ethics? Are we giving them the opportunity to do things we ourselves find reprehensible, only to say "Gotcha! I knew you were an asshole! Now look what you get!"

I've made that mistake in my writing before. And I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound like a fun experience, nor one that celebrates choice.

Once, instead of saying hello, I accidentally rolled into a significant NPC in Dark Souls, which they took as a hostile, permanently cutting me off from important lore and a particularly mechanic for the whole 60 hour run. I *loved* it because that is what happened in *my* story.

I prefer a middle ground : the game doesn't force you to replay the level, but you can chose to do so if you wish. To make sure the path you take is the one you choose, and not just because your cat mashed the wrong button at the wrong time (it's me, I am the cat).

Intellectually, I like canon world changes and I have enjoyed them, but I can think of a few instances where I either save scummed to get the 'good' result or just stopped playing after seeing the impact of my failure.

I'd say make it canon, players can reload their save if they don't like the result.

Good point. But if one is recognising that as a designer, why not just build it in to the game? Playing Disco Elysium, I'm constantly reloading to retake checks over 30% chance. It's not random, just a time sink. If they made it pass/fail, it would remove save spamming...
