Trying to workout if something is a me thing or a common, people thing. When something others praise doesn’t feel good to you, do you accept that you didn’t like it or do you convince yourself it’s just a different flavour of good you still need to acquire?

Understanding why people like things is an important part of being a creator, so I always try to analyse why a particular piece of medium I dislike resonates with others. But I think it's also important to acknowledge that people can like bad things, and popular != good.

Sometimes I don't get a piece of medium because it's a "different flavour of good I still need to acquire". Sometimes people enjoy different kinds of trash.

Practical example: Twilight is objectively a terrible book, but I can understand why people like it! It's just not my kind of trash! Thor 3, on the other hand, is an objectively good movie I LOATHE for personal reasons. So it's good, but not for me.

Perhaps one day I’ll stop trying to rewatch Marvel films and telling myself ‘this time you’ll love it, you just weren’t engaged before’

is this a safe place to admit that i found thor ragnarok equally as boring as the other mcu films

I thought it was just me I’ve watched so many of them thinking ‘this is the one that I’ll love’ and each one without fail elicits the same ‘eh I don’t care’ response which, I understand, is largely considered heresy

i cared about black panther, mostly for reasons to do with its worldbuilding and its willingness to explore why people do things. i feel like in most mcu movies it's just... stuff kinda just happens? and more stuff happens? idk how to explain it

I think for me it’s the whole action/action-adventure genre. It bores me because I don’t care about spectacle. I like it in games, where gameplay can recreate that feeling of BEING badass, but just watching it? Dull AF. No cigar.

If there’s existential threat then you can at least guarantee that I’ll feel something at some point, but that’s the extent of it. The action has to be serving and second (/third/fortieth) to a much more prominent emotional story or it’s just plastic in my eyes.
