Remembering fondly the time (~two years ago) when a senior took me aside to talk about my interest in an internal role for five minutes, with no warning, which turned out afterwards to have been my interview. They told me I hadn't got it several weeks after hiring someone else.

Know what covering three people's responsibilities does to you? It burns you out. It annihilated my mental health. And when that happens, you don't do your job very well. Instead of fixing my workload, they put me on a Performance Improvement Plan.

Luckily the story has a happy ending. I didn't have any reason to stay, so I left and became a Narrative Designer. It's like they say: Rob someone of everything and they're no longer in your power. They're free.

I'm glad you can say your life is better for it. I was treated similarly poorly when I was a young bartender. I was 23 and I ran a bar while my manager was on maternity leave. They got rid of me shortly after I asked for a raise or my overtime back in lieu. I'm happy they did.
