Growing up a Christian taught me self-hatred and socialism. I wonder how many others that's true for — and what went wrong with so many Christian conservatives.

I see the problems (for what concern myself, having grown in Italy) more with catholicism than with christianity in general. But yes, resonates.
I just don't get how anyone could read the new testament and think anything other than "Well, time to give to the poor and be kind to and accepting of others".

Which makes me think that anyone interested in a religion should first engage with the texts on their own rather than letting people with agendas feed them their agenda and bias-ridden interpretations.

Yes, I feel like in Italy you can't really separate religion from a strong sense of family and a rather hierarchical structure (I'm simplifying). And the sense of who is stranger/from other religions seen as a threat/invader. It's complicated.
