Growing up a Christian taught me self-hatred and socialism. I wonder how many others that's true for — and what went wrong with so many Christian conservatives.

American Christians are taught conservatism as part of their dogma (I grew up evangelical in Florida.) Definitely taught self hatred, fear of sexuality, but also mistrust of “government” as an entity that would inevitably oppress Christian beliefs. Had to unlearn a lot.
That's so interesting. I've always felt that socialism and Christianity went hand in hand because of how Jesus approached giving, but then I suppose many view conservatism as giving independently and not trusting a government to do it for you.

Right, it’s always very specific. And mostly they give through tithe at their church, and intend for that to be distributed as charity. Which is itself a socialist system!

Exactly. They prefer to give through their churches / personally. But often don’t realize this concentrates the charity immediately around them, or in random spots in other countries vs a well distributed system. The convo tends to quickly devolve to “socialism leads to tyranny”.
