Wondering how much writer (or equivalent) imposter syndrome is down to those around us repeating over and over that "you've wasted your degree", "it's never going to happen" and "hardly anyone makes it, so why should you?"

Others had this too, right? I got it from all sides while I was studying, especially in the lead-up to university. Family begging me to do something practical; friends saying our dreams weren't for us; their parents lecturing me about what a waste of time my course would be.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I've felt wisps of that throughout my life as well. Every generation is different for a myriad of reasons but so glad to hear that you've followed your dream and it's caught. Kudos to your drive and all your hard work!

One memory stands out during what was an otherwise great undergrad course. During a final tutorial basically every possible obstacle was rhymed off, needing agents, how few people would be successful etc etc. It was really odd, when it should have been a celebration...

It's all information that's relevant, but was never properly delivered with practical solutions throughout the 4 years with what we were learning. It was a bit like, "you've been great but a lot of you are now fucked."
