Wondering how much writer (or equivalent) imposter syndrome is down to those around us repeating over and over that "you've wasted your degree", "it's never going to happen" and "hardly anyone makes it, so why should you?"
My social circles drummed into me that my dreams were impossible for all but a few exceptions, which I was not. So now that they're becoming reality, I find that hard to accept, because everything I know tells me this wasn't supposed to happen. There's been a mistake.
A lot of people go off about the idealistic parenting of the nineties, saying it somehow ruined my generation. But that's not the issue here. The issue is the lengths others took thereafter to compensate for and annihilate my ambitions.
We're made to feel like failures before we've even had the opportunity to fail. No wonder tall poppy syndrome is so rife.
Others had this too, right? I got it from all sides while I was studying, especially in the lead-up to university. Family begging me to do something practical; friends saying our dreams weren't for us; their parents lecturing me about what a waste of time my course would be.
Absolutely. I see a lot of incredible talent around me, people who have been trying to break in for years. I feel guilty, like I jumped the queue.
I feel your pain just graduated this summer and all I'm getting is this narrative from family I'm like yall are meant to support me not rip me to shreds lmao 
I'm so sorry. That's the last thing you need. Your dreams are totally possible, and none of what you've done so far is wasted. Keep at it.
I have heard this so often and even though I’m not going anywhere, its pretty discouraging
Having seen your work, I don’t think you have to worry. Keep working at it the way you are and I have every confidence you can get there.
