whoever says superpowers aren't burdens has never had the superpower of always finding something to feel bad about in every compliment they ever receive... ever
okay maybe it's just a straight-up curse

'Your work is great' =
'Your work is generally great' = me now obsessing over the times when it wasn't and how distinct they must have been in order to justify the extra word of detraction -
It is most certainly a skill to filter feedback appropriately and I sympathise. That said, I'm sure you'll get there, because you're good at what you do.

if it helps, when I say "generally" in a compliment, it's anticipating that if I go "you're good at x!" the person can internally go "well I know that *one* time I did x badly, ergo, this whole compliment is Wrong". I'm not bringing my own exceptions, I'm trying to "nope" theirs?

I see your logic. For me it's like... even if I know I've not always been great, I kinda hope others won't know that XD Obviously I'll assume they're lying for some reason anyway but it does imo feel nicer just to get a no-holes-barred compliment
