Help me resolve an argument. The living room is where you...
That’s so interesting! A lot of people when I was growing up called me posh because our extended families were a lot better off, and my parents were both raised to speak that way, though we ourselves didn’t have much.

I moved around a lot as a child, my northern relatives would call me posh (for not having a regional accent more than any difference in wealth etc.). I think words like 'settee' and 'serviette' can be markers of Hyacinth Bucket-style aspirational language use.

Except that some websites will tell you "sofa" is posher than "settee". The debate has been raging on Quora for decades.

I've been called posh all my life. I've never had a Leicester accent despite growing up among kids who did, and I can't even do a passable imitation. I've been mistaken for a Kiwi (technically I am), Dutch, Danish, South African and German, all by my fellow Brits.

This! I was surrounded by the Devonshire accent growing up but I can’t for the life of me mimic it. A few people have asked where I’m from, or if I’m American, though tbf I think exposure to American media may have tinged it.

My family used living room. I grew up working (bordering lower-middle) class.
