In Britain, the term used varies according to geography, class, and age. I believe "sitting room" is more common in the North, and "living room" in the south, but the term my family uses is "lounge". We're lower-middle Midlanders, and we also say "sofa" instead of "settee".

My parents both grew up working class, but by the time I was in my teens, we were lower-middle. My language might be slightly different from that of the average East-Midlander owing to the fact that Dad was a Kiwi. We still say "crook" for "ill", but mostly amongst ourselves.

That’s so interesting! A lot of people when I was growing up called me posh because our extended families were a lot better off, and my parents were both raised to speak that way, though we ourselves didn’t have much.
