I understand some people use one room for both, or have neither — that’s been the case for me in the past, too. I’m talking about what you traditionally understand to be the case. Also this ‘family room’ stuff is blowing my mind.

And context: I was playing heavy rain and couldn’t find the plates because my wife told me they were in the living room. I searched for ages. They were in the dining room. I’m glad we’re divorced now.

A lot of houses here have what we call a 'reception' which is essentially just a massive open area that acts as both the living room *and* the dining room. So it has an area for couches and TV and another area close-by with a dining table and what not.

I've always used both for those purposes, even when we had a dining room. That was just for special occasions. If you're talking about 'traditional' usage, then the living room is where the TV is.
