One thing that always bugs me... when you say ‘generally’, do you usually mean it in the positive, glass-half-full sense of ‘consistently’, or in the glass-half-empty sense of ‘with exceptions’?

Same. I mentioned elsewhere, but if someone adds generally to a compliment I’ll tend to feel worse than if they’d just abstained. It almost feels malicious, like a way of saying ‘I want you to know that I think you’re not up to standard’.
