Follow up. When you use the word ‘generally’, do you do so with the intent to detract from a given statement, to sow doubts about the statement’s truthfulness?

Last one. If someone gives you a compliment, but adds the word ‘generally’, do you then feel good or bad about it? I.e. ‘You’re generally nice’/‘You’re generally skilled’ etc

Okay, LAST last. I wanna know if being a Brit has anything to do with how ‘generally’ is used and perceived. So, are you from the UK, and how do you feel about it?

I guess it depends on the context' implications and what I'm trying to say? Like, gluten bread is generally fine because the minority have gluten-related problem. While, caffeine generally affects your sleep cycle, because the minority didn't get affected by it.

Ok I just saw what I did there. Exceptions it is, then

So, I think context, how well you know said person and cultural differences matter a lot. Not being a native speaker myself, I'd say generally means 'in general with no negative or positive load added to it'. I had no idea people could perceive it any other way.
-
But, why can't it be neutral? If it can be perceived in a positive way and a negative way, maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle?

I guess you mean as an adverb, rather than a sentence start - e.g. "Generally, I'm clear about sentence construction" vs "I'm generally clear about..."? In the former, I'd say it just means "in most cases."
-
The former is still classed as an adverb, no? Those two sentences feel about the same to me — the placement didn’t change my interpretation
