I see, in my mind I think I was also expanding conflict to include 'challenge' for games, and my question was then also reflecting back to fight or flight vs tend and befriend style gameplay, but tend and befriend also has challenge, but it's self motivated? I think...

i wrote my thesis (and made my thesis game) about this subject. i believe that moving away from conflicts as the narrative focus begins with identifying something else that can serve as that focus, and i think one solution can be what Ursula Le Guin called "ongoing process"
