Give me difficult puzzles, difficult emotional scenarios to navigate, difficult topics to explore. That kind of difficulty I can get on board with.

Precisely. Difficult is fine when when it rewards you in a way that's not just 'the overly strong boss we created as an inconvenience is dead' or whatever. When it's human and challenges us as such. Gatekeeping of Platinum trophies etc behind "Hard Mode" doesn't help at all.
