I think I've even seen some of this in my mobile visual novel work, where the audience was primarily female. At first we focussed on drama and conflict, but people actually responded so much better to the moments of closeness and friendship.
I think this is more the case in games than in non-interactive media, where we can enjoy watching the conflict from a safe, entertaining distance. In games, we become part of it. And being part of conflict is inherently stressful, losing its entertaining edge.

Absolutely. It's the difference between looking at a car crash and *being in the car crash*. "Mel is angry with Abby" feels juicy, but when I am Abby, it becomes "Mel is angry with me", and that hurts.
