It made me not want to fight. And honestly, considering I've enthusiastically bought a game where fighting is necessary... that's an achievement. And, I believe, a manifestation of the game's message.

My feeling for all of the last part was "please, please stop fighting, please let it go". My care for the characters was greater than my inclination for an enjoyable experience to continue, for me to reap my usual dopamine reward. Impressive.

Same here. Every time I thought the game was finally over it continued and I was like "you are really doing this AGAIN?"

I never enjoyed brutality, but I knew what I was getting into. Maybe that just made it harder for me. You're right, I think they achieved exactly what they wanted and did a really great job there. It also didn't feel too far-fetched considering what's going on in the world atm.
