They kind of hinted at the switch in the beginning by having us play as Abby in the mountains for a little while, but I’m sure they’ve tested all sorts of approaches. Props to Naughty Dog for sticking to this more uncomfortable route becaused it ultimately served the story better
Yeah, they hinted that we'd be playing as her for parts of it, but (SPOILERS FOR ANYONE READING) I wasn't prepared to play for that long without Ellie, and I ESPECIALLY wasn't prepared to be set back in time and to build up all new skill trees and such.
Perhaps if when we first saw 'DAY ONE', it had been 'DAY ONE - ELLIE'. Perhaps tiny details like that could have helped prepare our expectations for having to replay the day as a different character?
