It's super super real. It's a heavy dense feeling in the air. it's got a fresh smell that's like crisp, but languid at the same time. Depending on whether its going to be a shower versus like a thunderstorm there's like a tension between the sky and the earth.

I'm not sure if I have a sense for it too or if it's just that I live in Britain so predicting rain when there are clouds in the sky has about an 80% hit rate.

Yeah, there is that I suppose (I live in Britain, too), though tbf it's CONSTANTLY grey in Nottingham. Also, when the cows are lying down. That's my go-to. One of those things you kinda have to announce when you see it. "Oh look, cows are lying down. Looks like rain, chaps."
