People act like these mediums are islands, but they're not -- we only treat them that way. #TheLastofUsPartII and games like it are the equivalent of land bridges that are growing into legitimate territories of their own.

Perhaps you just feel that those games haven't yet figured out how to make the most of their genre yet. That's valid. But these games matter all the more because they are acts of exploration, the shoulders others will stand upon and look back on as milestones of our growth.

I feel like RPG have literally always verged on being akin to a film. Especially JRPGs like those out of square Enix (Lost Odyssey anyone??). I don’t know why this is a bad thing??

It's not a bad thing. At worst, they just haven't optimised their genre yet. That doesn't happen overnight, though. These games are valuable stepping stones to reach that point.

I totally agree, I still remember playing the first Uncharted game and finding it not unlike I was playing through a summer blockbuster movie. It was awesome! Seeing the lines blurred between those two mediums has only spurred innovation in both while creating a unique space.

You know what I hate? Visual novels. Trying way too hard to be books.

That's the beauty of games though. They're so diverse, everyone can find something that appeals to them. TLOU being so movie like is probably one of the reasons it does so well. Games > movies though.

I think this genre is my sweet-spot tbh, as a player at least. Take Uncharted, for instance. As a film, I wouldn't have cared much about it, because action-adventure bores me. But as a game? Being able to feel like I WAS Nate, a clever, resourceful and badass adventurer? Loved it
