Exactly! I made a conscious decision when I started my novel to read it aloud (both as I was writing and while reviewing) in order to be sure of the voice and catch odd phrasing, and then I started doing it to aid with brainstorming (though prefer writing my thoughts) and now...

Writing centers at universities make this common practice and encourage students writing essays to do this. I always made my students read their work out loud to their peers during review sessions. I still do it for everything.

Yup!! I credit my old school's writing center for hugely improving my work. If I'm a good writer, it's absolutely because I talk through what I'm writing; it sounds better if I do that. Helps me avoid writing things that sound unpleasant to read.
