Do people like Trump and Johnson even expect people to believe them anymore? Do they care if we don't? Does our outrage affect them whatsoever? And why do I feel like the answer to all of those questions is no?
Is it unreasonable to expect the people who stand to run our countries to be better than book villains? I feel like the word 'realistic' has lost all its meaning in this context. Fiction has become more realistic than our ideals about reality.
Yes it is unreasonable. Politics stopped being about the good of the people, the day it became a full-time profession (wherein money and power corrupt). The ancients has it right; Electing a member of their community as representation with no additional agenda...
...They took the political role in addition to their real job with no personal financial benefits, in order to represent the people (including them self), and with no delusions of power created by long-term career goals.
