good question! without knowing context, i guess it'd depend on the kind of story it is. you know, if it's suspenseful, it might benefit from mystery/surprise. but honestly, in situations like these, i tend to pick what's most straightforward for the plot. i can change it later
Yeah. It's a fantasy with some suspense and mystery which is tied into the lore, what people know and don't know, but otherwise focussing on relationships.

Trying to judge the best journey for the reader: 1. initial understanding, then delayed developed understanding (skip for now, return later) 2. confusion, more confusion, then delayed understanding (keep it, contradict later) 3. instant understanding (use caveat to explain lore)

based on the way you're describing them, i kind of like option 1, but you may decide one of the other two is better for the reader. sorry to not be a more useful sounding board - it sounds like a really interesting story, though!
