Here's the thing about killing dogs in games. The last two times I've seen it (A Plague Tale, Life is Strange 2) it's felt extremely unearned. Both times, you barely know the dog. It feels like you're trying to take a shortcut to those endgame feels without doing the work. And it's ineffective. It doesn't make me endgame sad, it just makes me angry. At YOU. For making me watch that. For no reason. Seriously, way to guarantee I'll nope the hell out.
It's like we've just met and you're waving in my face shouting "CARE ABOUT ME BECAUSE I KILLED A CUTE THING LOOK HOW FRICKIN' CUTE IT WAS AND NOW IT'S DEAD SO FRICKIN' CARE" and I'm like... I just don't like you?
(Just to clarify, I still intend on continuing with A Plague Tale and there's much I enjoyed about LIS2, and I don't reaaaally hate you, I'm just annoyed you made me watch a dog die)
Do you have pets of your own? I have huge anxieties about my dog, so I find it really distressing in part due to that. It's a combo of their trust, their innocence, and our inability to properly communicate with them and explain/reassure.
I agree, it’s not even used as a way to help connect with Amicia as a character. Almost straight afterwards we get more detail to her character that makes us sympathise for her and *doesnt* include unnecessary dog death
Yeah, I didn't play much further than that but it seems that both games move on from it pretty quickly.
Right? There has to be some heady emotional weight tied to the choice. I can't imagine how devastating it would be to have a dog companion 90% of a game and then at some moment have to put it down or be unable to save it. But then again that's kind of a gut punch.
