The "good" way to interpret it, to my understanding, is essentially "don't feel that you are letting anyone down by taking things easy while you recover". And it's a great sentiment, one people need to hear. But we need a better way of articulating that.

The way I, and others, sometimes interpret it, is this: nothing about your situation needs to change. And believe me, if someone had said that to me while I was suicidal and taking 40+ max strength laxatives a day, I'd have been pretty upset. Because that was NOT okay.

So... People who like the saying: that's awesome and I'm glad for you. Those who use it: don't feel bad, because most people (like myself) trust that you mean it in the best way, even if they have their own interpretation. And people who hate it: I feel you.
