Outlines are awesome, and they can do wonders for your work. But what I would recommend is outlining individual scenes before you write them, identifying the conflict, blocking out the setting (especially things characters will interact with), planning how it changes in advance.

You CAN go into that much detail in your outline upfront -- you might find it helpful to do so -- but I feel this slows down my outlining process, makes me impatient. It takes so much longer. Better IMO to note the key/necessary beats and how each character feels about them.

On the other hand, deciding the more intricate details of a scene JUST before I write it gives me enough confidence and excitement and enough of a clear mental image to conquer blank-page terror and blast it out in a way that feels satisfying, structured and shapely.

TL;DR, my opinion of the ideal writing process: 1. Broad outline to shape the narrative, broken down into key beats with notes re: change in character feelings/motivations. 2. Just before you write, use the outline to block out the imminent scene(s). 3. Write and repeat!

Maybe what all of you are doing already and I'm just slow on the uptake, but just in case it helps anyone struggling with the blank page like I did in the past. This is a new approach for me (with prose anyway) and it's helping massively!

If outlining the entire novel is following a map and outlining individual scenes before you write them is like walking through the dark with a torch, this approach is a combination of both. You've got a map, and you can see far enough ahead of you to walk confidently.

I feel this so much at the moment. I know exactly what is supposed to happen and where the story is going to end up, but also, like, how do I get there!?

Absolutely recommend outlining in layers. Broad, then home in as you write. My outline went roughly: 1. Overall outline 2. Added in notes about character feelings 3. Used those to break down outline further 4. Started writing, outlining individual scenes just before

I actually love the Micropantsing. The outline gives me the structure to feel safe, but the freedom to let the book be informed by my own taste and my characters in the moment. I guess for me its, "just enough structure to let the intuition take over"

Although, when I find that I'm struggling with a plot point taking a moment to outline it or mentally map it out really helps. So this still resonates with me.
