I enjoyed it, but felt misled and disappointed when the choice mechanic so prominently tutorialised at the start was barely used, and not to any meaningful effect. I get the feeling intentions were had and cuts were necessary.

Yeah, I felt that. The games growing on me (slightly), but the illusion of choice is weird. I feel like every conversation I have, I can change her personality and nothing I can see feeds into later game choices or endings. Hopefully an improvement in the sequel.
