Question: when you ask ‘how are you?’ (or equivalent) are you actually interested in hearing an honest answer, or are you just being polite?

This is how I feel. I always feel surprised when I get a proper answer, so I mostly stopped giving proper answers because it started feeling awkward.

I only ask when I want to know. I tend to not ask most folks. instead of a casual hey how are you, I’ll stick with a simple good morning or afternoon, etc. I find most who ask me how i’m doing are going too fast to stop and hear the answer anyway so i also rarely answer

I want to know. I also don’t use that as a generic greeting. It’s one of the things that confuses me about small talk. I mean, I understand the usage. But I don’t understand why.

Bir of both really. I ask mainly due to social convention as part of politeness, and though I do get surprised when you get an answer aside from 'fine/well thank you' I am always interested, especially as when people arent too great it's a chance to try to help, even if just 1/2

By saying a kind word, or checking again a few days later, especially with work colleagues where you wouldnt normally expect too honest of an answer. 2/2

There's times at work where someone's walking by and say "Alright?" and I answer, followed with "You?", and they keep walking by without responding
