What’s better in the face of unconstructive criticism: the self-belief to ignore it and follow your vision or the humility to say you’re probably wrong and you just don’t understand why yet?

Yeah, this isn’t a personal experience (at least, nothing recent/current) but just thinking about the number of times I’ve seen talented people doing themselves and cut out the idiosyncrasies that make their work unique because of unconstructive criticism.
Here the definition of unconstructive though would be no mention of how to improve or even where. Just ‘you’re shit’ or the equivalent.

That isn't criticism then; that's just being insulted. If the person stating they dislike something isn't doing so for the benefit of improving the work or the creative person, or can't articulate it, then I'd at least question it. Not defensively, just a la 'help me understand'.
