What’s better in the face of unconstructive criticism: the self-belief to ignore it and follow your vision or the humility to say you’re probably wrong and you just don’t understand why yet?
This is very much a hypothetical. After Frozen II I’m in this blissful state of ‘believe in yourself, trust your gut’. But that got me wondering if that was too fairytale. How do I know that my gut can be trusted? Is that arrogant? I want to trust in trusting.
The two hypotheticals I considered were: - Someone criticises something bit gives no direction for where or how to improve, and you feel proud of it - Someone offers feedback, and you’ve weighed it up but decided you don’t agree Should you trust or doubt yourself?
Totally depends on who the critic is.
If the critique has no purpose beyond being mean you should follow your vision and ignore that person as they're wasting your time.
I’d probably push on with self-belief. Following up and asking for an explanation/something more constructive is usually worthwhile, but it sounds like a negative experience and might result in further frustration.
Anyone is capable of pointing out problems. Listen to that but know you don't have to embrace the specific solutions to those problems others provide. Unless they are your boss.
That I agree with, but that applies for more for constructive criticism
If it's well-meaning but ultimately unhelpful criticism it could be a learning experience for both of you! I find that a lot of time people who are unconstructive are only that way because they don't have the communication tools to be anything else.
I think self-belief if it’s in constructive is the way to go. I feel constructive criticism rarely has any useful form or function. It’s a flat statement with no real substance to help understand what’s wrong. Maybe if a particular statement is recurring it had merit.
Autocorrect messed up all my unconstructives and completely switched the entire meaning of what I typed.
