It’s a decision, but it doesn’t always feel like one; I just take it instinctively, a lot of the time. I can talk myself down, and usually manage to, but it’s an uphill battle. The key thing is, when I’m taking something personally, I’m distinctly aware that I’ve chosen to.
For me, it’s a very loud and persistent voice in my head that tells me ‘So what they’re really saying is that you’re not good enough’. There is a degree to which I decide to think it which I think stems from low self esteem, but it’s... slippery.

And that’s... not a particularly nice feeling. I hate doing it, but it’s easy to do, hard to avoid and hard to backtrack out of. Hard... but not unmanageable.
