Yeah, nothing wrong with clarifying and I think that solution works. I worry that if the argument escalated it would potentially increase any racial tensions, given that folks are so intensely proud of that part of their heritage — their mention in a best-selling Kingsley book.
With past reactions to this same thing (mentioned in the article), it just makes me anxious. My brain tells me this is the sorta thing that gives the left a bad rep and makes people less likely to take us seriously. But I could be coming at this from the wrong perspective.

From where I’m standing, the town’s nickname is no more or less offensive than The White Cliffs of Dover. If folks think we’re telling people we can’t describe things by colour anymore, we look stupid and lose credibility. And the right wing press laps that up, like you said.

This is why I question the source of the original complaints, because the right wing press actually has a track record of making shit up to cause controversy. Reading the article again, sounds like some businesspeople just want the nickname's meaning clarified for tourists.
