Just googled & read this article: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/11/01/little-white-town-devon-changes-signposts-claims-racism/ … Think that the compromise "Charles Kingsley's Little White Town" is great. I don't think "Little White Town" is a racist slur but just a little signalling to outsiders that Bideford isn't a white supremacist town is good.
I mean, few people do, but if it’s something that affects their heritage then it’s gonna rile folk. They could feel like their proud heritage is being taken away, and I don’t want them to associate that bad feeling with POC living in the area.

With past reactions to this same thing (mentioned in the article), it just makes me anxious. My brain tells me this is the sorta thing that gives the left a bad rep and makes people less likely to take us seriously. But I could be coming at this from the wrong perspective.

From where I’m standing, the town’s nickname is no more or less offensive than The White Cliffs of Dover. If folks think we’re telling people we can’t describe things by colour anymore, we look stupid and lose credibility. And the right wing press laps that up, like you said.
