Just googled & read this article: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/11/01/little-white-town-devon-changes-signposts-claims-racism/ … Think that the compromise "Charles Kingsley's Little White Town" is great. I don't think "Little White Town" is a racist slur but just a little signalling to outsiders that Bideford isn't a white supremacist town is good.

Yeah, nothing wrong with clarifying and I think that solution works. I worry that if the argument escalated it would potentially increase any racial tensions, given that folks are so intensely proud of that part of their heritage — their mention in a best-selling Kingsley book.

Which POC has actually raised objections, what is the substance of their argument? Genuine question

All I know is what’s in the same article you shared. But I had the same question.

I’m interested to know whether it was actually raised by a person of colour in the first place. If so, I wanna understand

Sometimes when you dig into these stories, it's actually well-meaning white people trying to be allies who are raising objections

And then POC are like, "Thanks for the effort! But uh, actually no we don't think there's a problem here". Then general embarrassment ensues

Also right-wing newspapers sometimes deliberately shit-stir these things, causing controversies where there are none, and blame it all on "political correctness gone mad".

There was a famous incident where the Daily Mail claimed that nursery schools had started banning "baa baa black sheep" on grounds of racism. Big controversy ensued, but the original report turned out to be false

Hilariously though, some earnest nursery school teachers did in fact start to ban "baa baa black sheep" after seeing the Daily Mail report...
