That sounds like a cool dad. :) I was never able to watch LOTR with him, but I would have loved to. Mine passed away in 1995. I was only 11. Cancer is a biatch.
Same age as me! Though for me that was 2004. Yeah, he was cool. Quite conservative in terms of religion, but definitely the foundation for my interests and skills today.

Return of the King came out on VHS just in time. We splashed out in a TV (still just a small one) so he could watch it from his bed.

Mine was very religious too. The day he died was the day I stopped believing. I couldn't process a god that would allow that to such a faithful servant. Last movie we watched together was probably the VHS for Indiana Jones and the temple of Doom.
