Today is bizarre. A funeral for the last of my grandparents, yes, but it also marks the end of many of our family gatherings. We all have our own micro families now, and we’re scattering ourselves across the country and across the world.
I don’t have much contact with my mother’s family, so these are all my dad’s, but my dad isn’t around and now neither are his parents. The family will visit my mum every now and again, but they’re not gonna come down this way for Christmas anymore.
Today I hugged everyone goodbye not knowing when I would see them next, only that it would not be Christmas, that it would not be soon. And it was strange. A lot of things are ending this year.
The term ‘scattering the ashes’ seems very loaded now, more metaphorical.
That’s so true as you grow older. My family used to have regular mass gatherings when I was a kid, now it’s only funerals that that happens, with the regular statement of “we should get together more, under better circumstances” that never come to fruition
