They have a totally different rhythm to a stop or emdash, too; a pause that doesn't return - quickly, like a dash - to the original clause, but wanders onwards instead; like listening to someone tell a story as they pause to reflect.
I love the sound a semicolon makes in my head. I’ve tried to explain to folks how different it sounds before, the subtle rhythmic difference it suggests, and they were just like NAH. But I stand by my point. I will die on this hill (unless someone gives an actual good reason).
