Many of us have to operate under the assumption that all those really cool games studios in the US are off limits. We will never be able to work there. And even if we were sponsored, if anything went wrong and we lost the job, we’d be screwed.

So if I got a job in the US, I wouldn’t be able to buy a house in case I lost my job and had to leave the country at short notice.

Yo, that’s really sad. What kind of resources have you tried using to help you with this & what kind of resources would you like to see exist? Also among the ones you’ve explored, which ones were actually helpful for you? What are some things we could do to help?

Honestly, I’d need to do more research to answer that question. I’m speaking from a place of never actually getting far enough in an application abroad to have to look too much into it. Most of what I’m saying is coming from what I’ve heard from others who have tried.

One thing I do know first hand though: an employer over there told me that they try to avoid sponsoring overseas applicants if possible mostly because of how bad it can get for those applicants if something goes wrong. Lay offs are a common culprit, but red tape errors can...

Also cause huge problems. And they’d rather not risk putting applicants through that to protect them from those worst case scenarios. I mean, ideally we tackle the core issue of stuff like lay offs, but I respect that they wanna be cautious and try not to ruin lives.
