Tradition is, mostly, an awful reason for doing something. Consider *why* you're doing it. Is it a good reason? Or just because it's become convention? Do you *have* to follow convention right now? What is the core thing you need to achieve -- is there another way?

Take screenplays. Convention: keep descriptions minimal, functional. But a script exists to communicate vision to the team that can bring it to life; you just need to do that in a way they will understand. The Game of Thrones pilot script is very description heavy, and it works.

This is all very much I'm learning *right now*. Previously, I've been a stickler for writing rules -- and that works for editing and writing in teams. But you gotta question why something is the done thing. Question whether you agree with it. No? Do it YOUR way.

There was a period, during 4th year and especially during my masters year, where I was approaching my first draft as if it had to be much closer to final draft territory. As great as Uni was for my development the structure can also create a sort of paralysis because of grades.

That’s been my experience since uni, until VERY recently. Couldn’t get past the first chapter for fear of not following every rule. You get penned in, scared to move. But the first draft NEEDS to be messy — you have to let rip, let your voice sing, then pull it into shape after.
