I'm very drained. And very insecure about it. And very gutted that something I've busted my ass for is still gonna need a lot of work before it's any semblance of good, and that a lot of people just won't like it anyway, because genre, because weird, because preferences.
Hoping some dopamine from ranting online will outweigh the bad feels.
Remember why you started writing it. Remember how you felt when you had The Idea. Drink from that spring every time you feel doubt.
Thank you :) I finally finished a full draft last night (got 3/4 there last week and decided it needed an overhaul). I need to edit now. The story is very much one that I would like rather than written to please others, so now I need to reconcile that choice with the consequence.
All the best stories just had a lot of redrafts. My advice is to leave it for a bit, work on something else and come back to it with fresh perspective. You'll see its strengths and weaknesses but most importantly, remember why you wrote it at all and how best to fulfill that
The incredible thing is you finished something. That's the hardest part, the part most folk can't get done and you've done it. So take pride in that and acknowledge you have what it takes to make a good story.
