I wonder if it’s a British thing, but here we seem to see adversity as almost a good thing. Someone who’s overcome adversity is admired, and rightly so. But also I think it’s lead some to believe that adversity is desirable and necessary in order to be admired.

Yeah this is toxic masculinity, this is what we’ve gotta fight against, just like we’ve gotta fight against the pressure on women to be thin, to be conventionally sexy, to be submissive when treated unfairly. It’s gonna stick around for a while, but we can chip away at it.
