Definitely make sure they have hotline numbers for the Samaritans/other reputable suicide prevention hotlines. Primarily though counseling/professional help if they aren't resistant.
TW: Suicide. I’ve been approached by a follower asking how to help a suicidal friend. I want to help, but feel giving advice myself would be disingenuous. I don’t have that much experience, and I worry about causing more harm through ignorance. What advice would you give?

Short term: be there for them . Spend time wigth them,. look after them a little. Donyt trý anf distract them relly, just be there. Help thrm while theyre struhhling wi these feelins Long term: make sure they go to their GP ad get referred to their communityy mental health tesm

They should ask their friend what would be best for them. Taking away any dangerous objects is a good start, but do they want to crash with a loved one? Spend time with a close friend watching netflix?

This is great. What if the person lives far away, though? What if they're an online friend?

I try not to handle situations like this and get professionals involved, me trying to solve this myself is not worth the risk. Other than that, just be there. :)

What I mean by that is, the average person isn't trained for this scenario & the best thing to do is get them professional help and ride it out with them

From experience working with suicidal students, I'd suggest your follower ask their friend if they feel they're unable to keep themself safe. If the answer is no, they should encourage their friend to call an ambulance and reassure them doing that doesn't make them a burden.

If they're having suicidal thoughts but feeling that they can keep themselves safe, your follower might ask their friend what they can do to help with their friend's mental space. Ultimately though they should be signed-posted to short and long-term support.
