Yeah I’ve been this person. When you love someone, you’re often willing to blind yourself to problems so that you can continue your belief that they are good and worthy of your adoration. I’m not saying it’s good; it’s definitely not. But I can empathise.

There's also, unfortunately, the need to be continue loved by the toxic person, who'll probably have made you afraid to do anything that might get you on their bad side. You're both a victim and an accomplice

I definitely feel that. Very literally: the first time it occurred to me to (very gently) tell the person I was hurt by something, the first time I didn’t just bottle it up to save their feelings, I was accused to treating them as an emotional punchbag.
