Maybe I'll have some luck here: Twitter, what natural ingredients could one use to dye their hair brown that would wash out extremely easily? A method that would sound legit for someone a few hundred years ago with very little money.

Ah yeah I think you are right, well a sort of brownish red / auburn ? Unless you can mix it in different strengths perhaps? Sorry I am no-longer blessed with hair and I only ever dyed my beard (bright green).
Well that sounds epic. I’ll do some more digging because I honestly don’t know, but always thought henna made the hair red. This person is trying to hide their red hair.
