Maybe I'll have some luck here: Twitter, what natural ingredients could one use to dye their hair brown that would wash out extremely easily? A method that would sound legit for someone a few hundred years ago with very little money.

Henna? https://www.wikihow.com/Apply-Henna-to-Hair … I know it's used in Indian culture for temp tattoos and stuff, I *think* it's pretty old natural stuff.
That makes it kinda red though, doesn’t it? Unless I’m wrong, at least. The important thing is that it’s not at all red.

Ah yeah I think you are right, well a sort of brownish red / auburn ? Unless you can mix it in different strengths perhaps? Sorry I am no-longer blessed with hair and I only ever dyed my beard (bright green).

Well that sounds epic. I’ll do some more digging because I honestly don’t know, but always thought henna made the hair red. This person is trying to hide their red hair.
