In the last week, I’ve experienced the most bizarre resurge in my prose-writing libido. I haven’t felt the drive like this since I was fifteen and it feels absolutely I n c r e d I b l e. Five thousand words down in the past three days alone. All I want to do is write.
So I think what happened here was:
- I got some great advise from @gregbuchanan that helped me set aside all the rules and constraints that had been burned into me and just write freely
- I bought myself a notebook and began messily brainstorming individual scenes in a stream-of-consciousness kind of way, just writing whatever came to mind as it did so, building further on my outline with notes about setting/character detail, emotion from moment to moment, etc
- Both these things together not only inspired me and allowed me to see my whole scene in vivid detail (rather than just a tableaux from them), but also to embrace a ‘voice’, which couldn’t really come out when I was concentrating on form from the outset
I really think the focus on stuff like ‘wait no I shouldn’t use adverbs’ was killing the joy of it and penning me into a space too small to stretch in. Now I feel like I’m out of it, and I honestly didn’t know I could feel this way again. It’s amazing.
