Exactly! He was never comfortable in the south. He’s king of the wildlings and they love him and he loves them. They’re more his people than the folks of Westeros.

It wasn’t overt, I just got the feeling that’s what they were implying when he led all the wildings north. No need for a nights watch anyway.

I assume he is more or less their leader, but with no title attached to his name. It wouldn't make sense for his arc to end with him becoming the new 'King-Beyond-the-Wall' when he didn't want the Iron Throne. I think it is more about him accepting that he is with his people.

Eh, I imagine they’ll call him that regardless of whether or not he wants it. I think the reason people are dissatisfied is that they expected him to be A king... and in my mind, he is now, but not the king we expected, which is a cool twist on it.
