At her hip, the worn scabard was begging to be used.
But when she looked at them — looked at them directly — she saw only red-cheeked boys, boys who had never heard a hard word. And when one of them looked at her, he seemed to be saying, “you wouldn’t hurt me, would you?”
She reached out for her saber.
The boys scattered in panic. She laughed in relief. Maybe she was just plain crazy. Dear God, she wished for it! But her smile froze as soon as she realised few of the boys were still standing, looking at her. (mis-posted this just before, deleted that one durrr)
