"This friend does!" Jeff bellowed as he emerged from the fog, immediately going in for an uninvited hug.

‘She let her shoulders sag with relief. There were worse things in the fog, she knew. Worse, even, than Jeff.’

"I don't see what all fuss is about, it's just fog". Jeff muttered. Sometimes she wished for Jeff's ignorance. How much easier that would make life.

He plonked down beside her, helping himself to the party rings and oblivious to the butter knife clutched in her hand. Simon watched, clenching his jaw. He said nothing.

In an uncharacteristic act of self awareness, Jeff stopped mid bite. "You don't mind if I have these do you?" - party ring detritus flew out of Jeff's mouth showering Simon. "You know what, Jeff? I'm done"

Her eyes widened. She almost wanted to say, “Don’t leave me alone with him”. But that was unnecessary. Jeff was an oblivious, patronising misogynist, but he was harmless — especially against a master bladeswoman, even one with only a butter knife.
