She scrambled up the fence, wincing as her sleeve snagged on the wire.
A few drops of blood marked the wire and the ground beneath her, marking her trail.
She didn't look back, but from the fog came the menacing sound of tubas. She scrambled up the fire escape and threw herself into the roof. The city stretched away before her, rooftops emerging from the mist like whales. In the distance, she could see the floats.
She was above the fog now, she realised, before realising something else. The fog had started rising.
